Knowledge is Power: Why Reading, Listening, and Learning Fuel Your Impact as a Leader
Scott Burgmeyer : 7/15/24 2:50 PM
Not too long ago, I was coaching a leader who felt like their contributions were less and less relevant in their organization. They had a long history with the company, and it seemed their organizational memory wasn't getting them the respect they thought it should. As we discussed this, one theme kept resurfacing: Being able to look backward can be valuable, but being able to look forward is crucial.
In today's ever-changing world, staying ahead of the curve is what keeps your skill set and knowledge base relevant. How do you ensure you have the knowledge and insights to make a real difference? By cultivating a habit of reading books, blogs, and listening to podcasts. Here's why these seemingly simple activities can significantly boost your impact as a leader:
- Expand Your Knowledge Base: Books offer in-depth exploration of complex topics. A University of California, Riverside study found that reading can improve cognitive function and memory. By delving into diverse subjects, you gain new perspectives and unlock a wealth of information to fuel your ideas and solutions.
This is why BecomeMore Group hosts free bimonthly book discussions. We pick books that expose leaders to a variety of topics and authors, and anyone is welcome to join us via Zoom. (You can see our most recent lineup of book selections and sign up to attend for free at this link.) - Stay Informed and Up-to-Date: Blogs and podcasts provide a constant stream of fresh information and insights—often in a really entertaining way. A HubSpot report found that 70% of internet users learn about new products or services through blogs. By subscribing to relevant blogs and podcasts, you stay current on industry trends, best practices, and emerging ideas.
There are a lot of great podcasts to choose from, but I'd be remiss if I didn't invite you to try "The Leadership Line," which I host with my business partner, Tammy Rogers. In about 20 minutes or less, it delivers a weekly dose of leadership insights about timely topics like giving feedback or handling workplace conflict. And we laugh A LOT while we record it, so I think you might have a good time too. It's available through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other outlets where you get your podcasts. - Sharpen Your Skills: Whether you want to master a new software or hone your communication skills, there's a wealth of learning resources available 24/7. Platforms like audiobooks and online courses make it easier than ever to learn on the go. A Skillshare report highlights a 73% increase in online learning course enrollments, demonstrating the power of accessible learning resources.
- Boost Your Creativity by Exploring Non-Work Pursuits: Exposure to new ideas and perspectives sparks creativity. A University of Buffalo study found that reading literary fiction enhances creativity and empathy. I get some of my best ideas when I'm driving my boat across a peaceful, beautiful lake. By stepping outside your comfort zone and exploring different genres of books, blogs, podcasts, and hobbies, you open yourself up to new possibilities and ignite your creative spark.
- Become a Better Communicator: Reading well-written content and listening to articulate speakers naturally improves your own communication skills. A National Endowment for the Arts report highlights the link between reading and effective communication. By consuming quality content, you learn to communicate your ideas more clearly and persuasively.
Investing time in reading, listening, and learning isn't just about acquiring information; it's about empowering yourself to make a greater impact. So, pick up a book, tune into a podcast, and embark on a lifelong journey of learning and growth. Remember, the more you learn, the more you can achieve.
