Sharpen Your Leadership: Why Investing in Leaders Pays Off

Written by Scott Burgmeyer | 6/17/24 1:06 PM

Great leaders aren't born, they're made. And investing in leadership development isn't just about feel-good initiatives; it's a strategic move with a significant impact on your bottom line.

I'm not just saying that because I run a company that helps develop leaders. I do what I do BECAUSE I believe so strongly that growing better leaders makes the world a better place. Here's why prioritizing leadership growth is crucial:

  • Employee Engagement & Retention: Gallup reports only 33% of U.S. employees are engaged, and managers are a key factor in how people feel about their jobs. Research shows it, and I see it again and again: Strong leaders inspire, motivate, and create a positive work environment, leading to higher engagement and lower turnover. A study by the Ken Blanchard Companies found that companies with strong leadership have a 70% lower turnover rate
  • Improved Organizational Performance: Strong leadership translates to better results. A Robert Half survey revealed that CEOs rank leadership as the most critical skill for business success. Effective leaders set clear goals, foster collaboration, and drive innovation, leading to increased productivity and profitability. Nothing gives me a bigger thrill than seeing improved metrics in companies that have invested in their leaders—at all levels.
  • Competitive Advantage: In today's talent war, strong leadership is a differentiator. A Deloitte report highlights that strong leadership is key to attracting and retaining top talent. By investing in leaders, you create a company culture that attracts high performers and fuels long-term success. This is something that Tammy Rogers and I have seen first-hand at our own company: Focusing on clear objectives and values—like growth and curiosity—has helped us grow our team with top-tier performers.

Investing in leadership development isn't a cost, it's an investment in your organization's future. By empowering your leaders, you empower your entire team, leading to a more engaged workforce and a thriving business.
