When clients engage with Predictive Index (PI) assessments, it’s crucial for them to answer questions honestly, as these results provide key insights into their behavior, preferences, and motivations in the workplace. The true value of the Predictive Index lies not just in the data itself but in the honest reflection of an individual’s true self—without influence from social expectations or perceived norms. I recently had an experience where a client related more to their self-concept section of their PI report more than their behavioral profile that populated based on their responses to the assessment. This caused me to dig deeper and solicit the support of the behavioral science team at Predictive Index, so many lessons were learned though their support!
As Certified PI Partners, it's essential to emphasize that clients should approach these assessments with authenticity. Why? Because the Predictive Index is designed to mirror how an individual naturally behaves, which may differ from how they think they should behave in a given context as it relates to their role. When participants answer in alignment with their true natural preferences and instinctual behaviors, we gain richer, more accurate data about their behavior that is translated into the characteristics of their PI profile.
What happens when someone relates more to their self-concept than their behavioral profile? By understanding how their self-identity impacts their responses, we can reveal deeper layers of insight about their innate drives and motivating needs might relate more strongly to how they view their current role as opposed to just their natural behavior. These insights offer a clearer picture of how they might engage in different work situations— especially as it relates to their role. All the perceived behavior that is required to be successful in their current role might be what the client focused on when completing their PI assessment which would identify how their behavior could be translated in their self-concept section of the PI assessment. This could explain how the client’s behavior is perceived in leadership roles, collaboration, communication, or decision-making processes.
For Certified PI Partners, interpreting these responses requires looking beyond the behavioral profile alone. It’s about understanding how an individual perceives themselves and how that perception influences their approach to work in their current role. It’s not just about being accurate in categorizing someone; it’s about using that data to tailor strategies for stronger communication and collaboration to ensure each person can be lead with their motivating needs in mind. This approach will ultimately lead to clients achieving higher performance in the workplace with their workforce being fully supported.
In the end, encouraging clients to answer all the PI assessment questions honestly will yield results that reflect their true self—providing more precise guidance for development, team alignment, and leadership growth. So, let’s guide our clients to trust the process, embrace authenticity, and see the true value of ALL the data points provided by Predictive Index assessments.
