Keys to Success Working with Clients

Written by Susan Elder | 12/17/24 5:00 PM

As a professional who has had the privilege of working with a variety of clients, I’ve learned a number of valuable lessons along the way. Each client brings a new perspective, their own challenges, and their own approach. In reflection, I’d like to share two key lessons that have shaped my work with clients who have enriched my professional journey.

1. The Power of Possibilities

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the power of truly listening to my clients so you can explore possibilities together. To get here, you much be a strong active listener. Active listening goes beyond hearing words—it’s about understanding emotions, identifying unspoken needs, and being present in the moment so you can explore possible solutions together. This might sound simple, but it is a game changer!

By asking the right questions and listening without interrupting, I’ve found that I can better tailor my approach to what clients and stakeholders actually need, not just what they think they want. This not only leads to more effective solutions but also fosters deeper, more trusting relationships. Clients appreciate feeling heard, which allows us to build a successful partnership.

2. Adaptable, AND Moving Forward

Another lesson I’ve learned is the importance of adaptability in working with clients. Each project, team, and client dynamics are unique, so not being able to adapt to their approach could lead to missed opportunities. While having a clear strategy is crucial, being adaptable in the face of changing circumstances, feedback, or new information is just as important.

Clients may face shifting priorities due to external factors or sometimes come with different expectations than what was initially agreed upon. The ability to pivot, adjust timelines, and accommodate new ideas without losing sight of the overall goal has proven to be invaluable. Being adaptable allows me to stay aligned with the client's evolving needs while ensuring that we still move forward toward achieving the desired results.

Key to Success = Partnership

At the heart of every successful client relationship there are two things: possibilities and adaptability - both can help you create a true partnership. I’ve been able to meet clients where they are and guide them toward meaningful solutions to help them keep moving forward. These lessons continue to shape the way I approach each new client engagement, reminding me that growth is not only about achieving outcomes but also about learning along the way.
