Strategy Execution: From Leading to Following

Written by Marlene Sprouse | 2/7/25 3:45 PM

My current role in strategy execution is much different than it was several years ago. Back then, I was the person leading the identification and development of strategies for an organization. I was responsible for keeping the projects moving, laying out processes, and assessing progress.

Today, I am in a worker-bee role and a support role. Now, it is my job to assist colleagues who have volunteered or been identified as leaders for specific strategies.

This may seem like this is a step-back, even a downgrade of sorts. I don’t think so. It’s just a different role. I need to be a good team member, no matter what position I am playing. Since it has been a few years since I was in this support role, it was necessary for me to deliberately give some thought to how I might be the best teammate possible.

Here is a simple yet impactful list that I decided I can be and do to help my team and organization fulfill strategy.

  • Listen intently for understanding of the project, of the process, of others’ ideas.
  • Ask clarifying and challenging questions in a respectful way.
  • Know my role, my tasks, my job.
  • Stay in my lane while at the same time being prepared to offer ideas and jump in when appropriate.
  • Be responsible, fulfill obligation with a generous attitude and energy.
  • Laugh and enjoy working with my colleagues.

There is nothing earth shattering here, just thoughtful and intentional.
